The “Work-Life Balance” Myth

BY JESSICA | 27 SEPT 24

Being a mom and a business owner feels a lot like running a marathon... except you’re barefoot, trying to calm down an angry teenager mid-race, and —just for fun—someone hurls your phone into the bushes. You know, the usual. Just another day, right?

There’s this elusive thing everyone keeps talking about, that magical 'work-life balance.' Is it a myth? I don’t know about you, but I’m still waiting for mine to show up. It’s probably stuck in traffic, like everything else in my life.

A Day in the life: it’s all a dance

Picture this: The alarm goes off, and I’m already thinking about business growth, mentally reviewing emails, and hoping today won’t be the day my kids decide to act like they’ve never seen a school bus before. But the real fun begins with the morning dance. No, not a cute little TikTok routine, but the chaotic hustle of getting everyone ready, making sure homework’s in the bag, lunches are packed, and trying to remember that I actually have a meeting in half an hour.

This “balance” they talk about? Yeah, more like a tug-of-war. Some days, I’m all-in on work; other days, it feels like I’m barely surviving as a mom. Both roles tug at me constantly, and the idea that I can give equal time to both is laughable at best.

Multi-tasking: the real olympic sport

I used to think multi-tasking was a skill. Now I realize it’s just survival mode—whether it’s a client crisis or the fact that my teenager’s favorite hoodie didn’t magically wash itself. The ability to write client emails while negotiating my 9-year-old’s screen time is a true skill. Maybe I deserve a medal. My house may be my office, but it's also ground zero for daily distractions. And my office setup? Oh, I have two lovely windows that separate my workspace from the kitchen. One is a floor-to-ceiling masterpiece, and the other is a sleek black door. Do they keep distractions out? Absolutely not. My kids have turned them into "mom-alert" stations. Either I’m met with a chorus of yelling from across the house, or I get a full-on face pressed against the glass, reminding me that yes, someone always needs something.

Some days, I beg for just five more minutes in the office to finish a task. And what do I get instead? My best ideas popping into my head right as the kids come home from school, each one more than eager to share every single moment of their day. Ever tried writing copy while hearing three different stories about recess drama at once? That’s my reality.

The Reality of Priorities, Not Balance

Here’s the thing: there is no perfect balance. Life doesn’t split evenly between work and family. Realistically, some things demand more attention than others at different times. Take those so-called “busy quarters” at work. You know, when deadlines pile up and every project feels urgent? Yeah, during those times, the idea of achieving balance goes straight out the window. Suddenly, work takes over, and family dinners start looking like takeout boxes scattered across the kitchen counter.

On the flip side, when the holidays roll around, family takes center stage—except the irony is that sometimes, those family-focused days still happen in the middle of your busiest work seasons. But hey, who needs balance when you’ve got the chaos of life keeping you on your toes, right?

Work Life Balance vs. Work life Integration

Here’s a plot twist for you: maybe we’ve been looking at it all wrong. Forget work-life balance and start thinking about work-life integration. Instead of trying to split yourself into perfect halves—half work, half family—why not blend the two? Technology has already blurred the lines between work and home life, so maybe we should stop fighting it.

There’s no 9-to-5 cutoff anymore. My day doesn't end just because the clock strikes five. Emails get answered after dinner, and sometimes business ideas come to me while I’m driving the kids to hockey practice. It’s less about balance and more about figuring out how to weave it all together. Yes, it’s messy, but sometimes messy is good.

The Real MVP: rebounding

You know what keeps me sane? Walking. I’ve heard it’s great for clearing your mind, and I agree. But let’s be honest—I don’t have the luxury of hitting 10,000 steps a day while trying to run a business and wrangle my kids. Sure, walking is great for lowering stress, but who has the time to casually stroll around the block for hours? Not me.

So, in a moment of desperation (or brilliance, depending on how you look at it), I went down the rabbit hole of the internet looking for an alternative. Something that could give me the same benefits—lower cortisol, clear my mind, keep me moving—but, you know, without requiring me to abandon my life for hours. That’s when I discovered a mini trampoline called a rebounder.

Let me tell you, I’m no expert on how many jumps equal 10,000 steps, but it’s definitely faster than walking all of them. Plus, it’s way more fun. I mean, who doesn’t want to jump around like a kid again?

So now, my little trampoline is parked right next to my desk. After every 50 minutes of work, you’ll find me bouncing away, trying to stay zen while getting in my ‘steps.’ Honestly, it’s the best break ever—except for one minor issue. Let’s just say, after having kids, bouncing on a trampoline comes with certain risks. Moms, you know what I’m talking about. One wrong jump and, well... let’s just say a quick bathroom trip might be in order.

But hey, nothing’s perfect, right? And if jumping around on a tiny trampoline for five minutes helps me keep my sanity, I’ll take it—even if it means crossing my legs while I do it.

The Takeaway: Imperfectly Balanced is Still Balanced

At the end of the day, it’s not about achieving some ideal version of work-life balance—because let’s be honest, that doesn’t exist. It’s about accepting the imperfection. Some days, I’m a business powerhouse, firing off proposals and landing clients left and right. Other days? I’m just a tired mom, waiting for bedtime like it’s a finish line at the end of a never-ending race.

But you know what? That’s okay. Imperfectly balanced is still balanced in its own chaotic way. And you can find your own version of balance too, whether you’re a mom, a business owner, or both. Forget perfection and embrace the mess.
