How a Random Encounter Turned My Marketing Dreams Into Reality!

BY JESSICA | 18 SEPT 24

Ever since I was little, I’ve had this dream: to own my own company. Like my dad. He always seemed to know what he was doing, so I figured, "Why not follow in his footsteps?" Fast forward to my early 20s, I was ready. I enrolled in business school, ready to conquer the world, and was on the fence about whether to go for an accounting degree (numbers, yay) or a marketing degree (which sounded way more fun, let’s be honest).

But then... I met David. And let me tell you, he flipped my world upside down. In the best way possible, of course. He was eager to get to know me better, and before I knew it, I was making life decisions based on this guy. I had dreams to chase, but the business school I wanted to go to was in the city, and instead of heading off to fulfill my career goals, I chose to stay close to him and took a job nearby. And I can’t say I regret it, but it definitely put a little detour on my entrepreneurial dreams.

Life Happened: Spoiler, It Wasn't Always Smooth Sailing

Life has a funny way of shaking things up, doesn’t it? David and I got married, and soon we were dealing with a whole new set of struggles—like trying to start a family, which didn’t exactly go according to plan. On top of that, I was trying to build a business while raising little humans who thought "quiet time" meant running through the house like tiny tornadoes. Life was messy.

Being a wife to a man who worked crazy hours, trying to wrangle kids, and starting a business felt like a juggling act where the balls were always just a bit too slippery. I tried all sorts of ventures—seriously, you name it, I probably gave it a go—but nothing really stuck. It was like running uphill in roller skates. Cute, but exhausting and totally impractical.

The Great Pause: And Yes, I Mean That Pause

Then The Great Pause happened. You know what I’m talking about. The world stopped, and so did my face-to-face client work. And suddenly, I had all this time to think about what I was doing with my life. I was getting clients, sure, but it was all in person—which was a huge problem when face-to-face wasn’t really an option anymore.

This got me thinking back to high school, when a guest speaker came in to talk to us about life. I wish I could give this person credit, but I have no idea who he was. I just remember his face (vaguely) and his advice, which was, “If you want to succeed, find a mentor.” Cool, but what did that even mean? Did I have to, like, hire someone? Get a job at a place with a built-in mentor system? I was clueless, but I figured I’d try it out.

Mentorship: My Clumsy Search for Guidance

So, when it came time to choose the right person to marry, I used this mentor strategy... sorta. I didn’t exactly find a mentor for marriage. Instead, I went around town asking happy-looking couples about their relationship. You know, super casual. I was craving that connection—something I didn’t find at home or with friends at the time.

Oh, and this was pre-internet, so no Googling "how to have a happy marriage" for me. For anyone born after 1999, let me paint a picture: no social media, no YouTube advice videos, and that screeching dial-up sound? It’s burned into my brain. So instead of blogs or vlogs, I relied on real-world advice. I’d find couples that looked even remotely content and grill them about their secrets. Awkward? Maybe. But I got my answers and went after what I wanted. Spoiler alert: David passed the test.

The Great Pause, Take Two: Time to Find a Marketing Mentor

Fast forward to The Great Pause (part two), and I found myself in the same boat. I needed to pivot my business, and I knew I had to find a mentor. But not just any mentor—someone who knew their stuff when it came to marketing. I had to figure out how to bring in clients without actually, you know, meeting them in person.

That’s when I attended this online event hosted by Dean Graziosi and Tony Robbins. They were talking about how to build a knowledge-based business, and I was soaking it all in. And then... enter Russell Brunson. He started talking about how his business was changing people’s lives, and it was like a lightbulb moment. Ding, ding, ding!

The Online Event That Changed Everything

This guy, Russell, had studied marketing his entire life, and now he was teaching others how to use it to grow their businesses. Jackpot! I felt like I had hit the mentor lottery. Here was someone who had all the knowledge I needed, wrapped up with a bow. His approach to marketing made sense to me in a way that nothing else had before.

Diving Into Russell Brunson's Marketing Secrets

So, I did what any sane person would do—I dove headfirst into everything Russell Brunson had to offer. I devoured his books, binged his videos, and got lost in the rabbit hole of his marketing secrets. But here’s the thing... there was so much information. I felt like I’d just opened a giant buffet, but I had no idea where to start. Should I tackle building a website? Landing pages? Email lists? Social media strategies? Oh, and don’t even get me started on creating a course or figuring out sales funnels! It was like trying to drink from a fire hose, and I was drowning in it.

But, slowly (like, really slowly), I started piecing things together. The cool part was that his strategies weren’t just about raking in cash—they were about actually building relationships with customers, creating value, and scaling a business in a way that made sense. No sleazy tactics, just real connections and smart marketing.

And honestly? I was hooked. It was like someone finally handed me the missing puzzle piece, and bit by bit, everything started to click.
